A Star Dance Clip or SDC is the act of grabbing a star in a way that will make Mario grab a nearby ledge to gain height. It is especially useful in the A Button Challenge
Explanations
When Mario does certain actions, a Dive Recover for example, he is in a state where he cannot grab any ledge. However, grabbing a star will immediately put him in the star dance action, which has the ability to grab ledges. While the animation of the ledge grab does not play, Mario will appear at the top of the ledge just like if it had.
Uses
This trick is often used in the A button Challenge:
- Unavoidable:
- in The Castle: to go to Hazy Maze Cave 0x[1]
- in TTC: to get to the highest walkway 0x in Stomp on the Thwomp[2]
- Faster
- in WF: to get on the Bullet Bill Block in To the Top of the Fortress 0x[3] (without SDC but slower strat: using a platform release displacement[4])
- in CCM: to collect the 100 coin star in the slide (so that we can immediatelly after that collect the star for Big Penguin Race). This one doesn't look like it uses SDC, but the 100 coin star is on the slide, where Mario cannot perform a dive recover, so he slides off the edge, does a ground pound (to raise height). Without SDC, he would fall down to the death barrier[5] (without SDC but slower strat: exit the slide before the 100th coin, and collect it outside)
- in BBH: along with a Crazy box and three Scuttlebugs to reach the mansion roof in Big Boo's Balcony 0x[6] (without SDC but slower strat: raise scuttlebugs a bit differently (ether similar for crazy box[7], or inside[8])
There are some previous strategies, now obsolete (due to time save), for example to reach the THI mainland[9].
